Departure from hotel (Holliday Inn) at 7h15 AM
Itinerary: Curitiba – Morretes – SPVS Reserve – Curitiba
A bus will take us to the Rodoferroviária (Train/Bus Station) to board the 8h AM train to Morretes (click here to find out more about Serra Verde Express).
This centenary railway, an engineering masterwork, travels 110 km through 13 tunnels and 30 bridges, arriving in
Morretes at 10h40 AM. The railway descends a steep coastal escarpment, along the Marumbi Range of the “Serra do Mar”,
traveling through lush Atlantic Rainforest, one of the world’s biodiversity “hot-spots”. Along the way you will see waterfalls,
massive granite peaks and centenary trees.

At Morretes, a quaint city founded in 1733, we will walk (around 15 minutes) from the train station along the River Nhundiaquara to the downtown area where we will have some free time to walk around and view (and purchase) some of the local arts and crafts in shops near the restaurant. At the Madalozo Restaurant we will savor the typical local dish called “Barreado”. The meal is accompanied by shrimp and fish prepared in various manners, sweet manioc flour, rice, bananas and oranges (beverages will be charged separately).
After lunch we will board a bus for a one-hour ride to the Sociedade de Proteção da Vida Silvestre (SPVS) Reserve at Ribeirão Cachoeira, where a 5 year German-Brazilian SHIFT-CNPq project has been studying soil processes and soil biodiversity in native and recovering Atlantic Rainforest. At the Reserve we will divide into several groups of around 30 persons to walk for around 1.5 hours along the “Interpretive Trail”, where the guides will explain (in English, French, German and Portuguese, depending on the group), the work that is being undertaken in the project.
At around 4h30 PM, there will be a small snack and drinks at the SPVS Welcome Center, and the bus will leave for Curitiba at 5h PM, arriving at the Hotel at approximately 7h15 PM.
